EARLS COLNE U10s vs Long Melford

Cup Match

Result 2-3

Date: Sunday 18th November 2007

It was a very cold afternoon at the Rec., with a high wind blowing.

Strangely the boys seemed a bit reluctant to join Allan on the wind swept field and instead, clung to the shelter of the changing block. This was in sharp contrast to Long Melford, who were already out on the pitch going through their warm up routine in a very well organized fashion, made even more impressive by their bright blue training jackets.

Allan mustered the boys and explained that their opponents had already obtained a psychological advantage by appearing to be more keen and prepared than they did.

The match kicked of (wind at Clone's back) five minuets early and straight away Colne were 'bossing' the park, grabbing more early chances and preventing Melford from building any kind of attack. Tom was having an outstanding first half; covering ground and scrapping for the ball at every opportunity.

Reed got a goal after 12 minutes and a shell shocked Melford nearly conceded a second soon after. Colne were looking better and better as the game went on!

At the half time whistle, Allan immediately got the boys together. Encouraging them to keep closing Melford down, but to watch out for the wind (now blowing harder than ever) which would be in the opponents favor.

At the kick off, it was obvious that Allan's warning was justified. Within a few seconds melford equalized with a long range shot. Now we would have to start all over again. And that is what the boys did! Charging up the pitch only moments latter to score the second (REED AGAIN).

Colne played well after that, blocking many attacks, while Jack saved several shots. But it was not going to be our day. A mix up in front of goal meant Melford got an easy equalizer. They topped this soon after with a third just before full time.

Colne U10s had put up a very worthy performance, but cold and exhausted, they walked off the pitch with the pain of being knocked out so early, and after having given so much, etched on all their faces.

Great game; bad luck.
