Under 12s Match Report

28th October Under

Earls Colne 0 – Tempest 4

It sounds odd to be pleased with such a score line, but the score hides the resolve and steel with which we played.

With only eleven players available we knew that it was going to be hard work against a side that beat us 9-0 at the start of the season, but I was also confident that we have made progress since then and that we would play with more authority. Patrick moved into midfield and Sam went up front, with Jamie moving to right back.

With no ref available I had to become the man in black. The lack of me hollering seemed to improve the boy’s performance, so I cannot claim that we were hampered by having no manager. Charming…

Two mistakes let us down in the first half – on both occasions defenders dived in leaving space behind them for Tempest to exploit, which they did. We battled hard, with Jake, Calum, George and Louis standing out. We made a few inroads into their half, and Cameron managed to get a strike at goal, but unlike last week his effort didn’t reap rewards. Tempest were strong in all areas of the pitch, and our midfielders were running themselves ragged keeping their passing game at bay.

Tempest moaned about the ball being flat, and then promptly booted it over the hedge, which was a little harsh! The second half was more of the same, with much of the game played in our half. Our only real chance fell to Louis; a knock on from Harry following Calum’s free kick, but he couldn’t make a decent contact and the ball skidded wide.

We lasted twenty minutes of the half without conceding. Jamie was playing well, as was George, Calum and Jake. Thomas made a number of fantastic saves, and was picked out by the Tempest manager as a real bonus for our side. Louis, Harry and Luke were tackling with controlled ferocity, and epitomised a ‘never say die’ attitude. Ironically, after failing to get a blatant handball in our previous meeting of the sides, I had to award Tempest a penalty when the ball bounced up and against Louis’ arm. Despite getting his fingertips to the ball Thomas could not save the powerfully struck shot. As time ticked down Tempest broke through once more. I looked across at the line but Kevin indicated that we had played the attacker on, and he went through and slotted the ball home. So 4-0 was harsh, but we fought and fought and never let our heads drop.

I was very proud of the boys. Thomas had a great game, Louis and Harry did what they do best, and Jamie played his best game of the season. As I had reffed, I asked Kevin to choose the man of the match, and he chose Calum. Calum had not played last time we met Tempest, and the difference was clear.

Well done boys – you can be proud of yourselves. Thanks to the supporters for standing in the rain, and to Kevin for running the line with such integrity.

Please bring the yellow kit back to training on Friday – venue to be announced.
